At $10.00 each, the 2012 Children’s Art Calendar makes a great gift for family and friends and is sure to brighten each month of the upcoming year.
Over the summer the children and youth at Hathaway-Sycamores Highland Park Family Resource Center created vibrant watercolor paintings depicting creatures “At the Zoo” under the guidance of Master-in-Residence artist, Mary Kay Wilson. The results of their efforts have been transformed into Hathaway-Sycamores’ 2012 Children’s Art Calendar.
In the Master-in-Residence program a professional working artist is invited to work with our kids to create a unique art project designed to introduce underserved youth to art. Before tackling their watercolor paintings of colorful zoo creatures, Master-in-Residence artist, Mary Kay Wilson introduced the children to basic concepts of drawing. The drawing exercises help the children to experience seeing the way an artist sees. Wilson guided the young artists through the design process and introduced them to the basic techniques of watercolor painting. Paper mache was an additional technique used in this year’s paintings. The children used feathers, pipe cleaner, cardboard, yarn and other found objects to add texture to their zoo portraits. Watercolor ground was applied to the areas where paper mache was incorporated before the artists applied watercolor paint. According to Mary Kay, “This was a challenging project, working with kids ranging from 5 to 15 years old and helping each child realize their own unique vision. Seeing the resulting artwork of the kids and experiencing their satisfaction made it well worth the effort. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with these passionate young artists in such a supportive environment where the kids are truly able to create art.”
