Thank you to everyone who joined us for the “Shot-at-a-Million” Golf Classic!

Hathaway-Sycamores "Shot-at-a-Million"

Rob Myers, Whitney Drolen and Rick Llamas

While no one became a newly minted millionaire by sinking an improbable hole-in-one, participants and their supporters made a meaningful difference by raising over $157,000.00. Proceeds from the annual event, which was held on May 18 at the Jack Nicklaus designed Angeles National Golf Course in Sunland, will help fund educational and therapeutic-treatment programs for the youngsters and families served by Hathaway-Sycamores.

More than 200 people took part in this year’s event, including golfers who raised money by hitting the links in the “Longest Day of Golf” or the “Nine-Hole Team Scramble.” Ten golfers qualified to take a swing at a hole-in-one and instantly become a millionaire, but no one made the 165-yard shot. The event concluded with a 19th Hole After-Party that was emceed by KCBS news and traffic reporter Whitney Drolen. In addition to catered refreshments, entertainment, and a silent auction, numerous prizes were raffled, with two lucky guests winning trips for two to Maui and New York.

Brad Freer, Lisa Freer, Donald Kaplan, Simon Gee, Elisha Marquez and Alejandra Negrete

Guests additionally had the opportunity to hear from three, standout high school seniors—Donald Kaplan, Elisha Marquez, and Alejandra Negrete—all of whom have achieved tremendous academic success. Come this fall, Kaplan will attend Bucknell University, Marquez will start her freshman year at Stanford, and Negrete will head to UC Irvine. The teens all credited their prestigious acceptances—each of which were accompanied by full-tuition scholarships—to the years of afterschool tutoring they received at Hathaway-Sycamores’ Highland Park Family Resource Center.

Hathaway-Sycamores’ President and CEO William Martone thanked everyone in attendance for their generous support of Hathaway-Sycamores, noting that, “Whatever skills you lack on the golf course, you more that make up for in the caring and compassion you’ve shown for children and families who are really struggling. We can’t thank you enough, and as far as that shot at a million, there’s always next year.” A special thank you to our 2012 “Shot-at-a-Million” Golf Classic sponsors. Click here for the list of sponsors.
