The Los Altos Auxiliary of Hathaway-Sycamores holds successful fundraiser for kids in need

More than 200 caring members of the community spent Sunday afternoon, April 28, sipping wine while simultaneously raising much needed funds to help care for and brighten the lives of youngsters – many of whom have endured unimaginable trauma – who live at Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services’ El Nido campus in Altadena.

The event – “Wines of Italy, A Tasting Experience” – was organized by the Los Altos Auxiliary of Hathaway-Sycamores and held at the picturesque, private home of David and Julie Battaglia of La Cañada. (David Battaglia is a member of Hathaway-Sycamores’ Board of Directors.) Here, guests sampled eight highly rated regional Italian wines, starting with a sparking Prosecco, followed by crispy whites, and then moving on to heartier reds – including both a Super Tuscan and an Amarone. Light appetizers, chosen specifically to pair with the selected wines, were prepared and served expertly by Le Cordon Bleu students who volunteered their time as members of the school’s Community Outreach Club.

Commenting on the successful fundraiser, Hathaway-Sycamore’s President and CEO William Martone thanked event co-chairs and La Cañada residents Diane Poryes and Kelly Springer, adding that, “The Los Altos Auxiliary makes a year-round difference in the lives of those who call our residential-treatment facility home, and we appreciate the efforts of every member of this extraordinary group.” (Nestled in the foothills of Altadena, Hathaway-Sycamores’ residential-treatment facility provides therapeutic services and special education in a nurturing environment that fosters both healing and individual growth.) Proceeds from last year’s wine-tasting event were used to remodel the residential dining room and add a “cyber café” for recreation as well as one-on-one therapy sessions, group therapy, tutoring, and studying.
