It’s Official: The Gutierrezes Are a Forever Family of Five!

Miguel and Macrina Gutierrez – whose Whittier home was only occupied by themselves and two cats for 17 years – officially became a forever family of five on June 24, 2014, at Monterey Park’s Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court. Or – as the Gutierrezes have dubbed their new family unit – the Fabulous Five.

The Fabulous Five came to be when the Gutierrezes’ life path crossed with the path a trio of siblings. For Miguel and Macrina, who wed in 1995, it was assumed that their life path would include having children. In time, however, it was discovered that Marina – who works as a substitute teacher with the Montebello Unified School district – was unable to conceive. The couple accepted their childless status until a chance conversation pointed to another avenue. Miguel, who is a longtime UPS employee, was talking with a co-worker about his and Macrina’s struggles to start a family. The co-worker told Miguel that his wife works at a local agency – Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services – and that they have adoption and foster family programs.

The couple attended a Hathaway-Sycamores’ foster parent orientation session and – because their ultimate goal was to have a permanent family – their first question was: Can fostering a child lead to adoption? The answer was a resounding “yes.” In fact, the Gutierrezes learned that there currently are more than 19,000 children and teens in Los Angeles County’s foster care system, hundreds of whom are available for adoption. Sensing that fost-adopt was the right path to pursue, Miguel and Macrina completed the process to become certified foster parents on July 9, 2012. Just 21 days later – on July 30, 2012 – the Gutierrezes opened their hearts and home to a trio of siblings.

“Hathaway-Sycamores held our hands every step of the way,” says Miguel, “and that made the process a lot easier.” In light of their experience, the Gutierrezes have become fost-adopt advocates, welcoming any opportunity to increase awareness about the many children in need of permanent homes.

“When we first saw them,” Macrina says, “we just knew in our hearts that these were our children.” And given the siblings’ backstories, the Gutierrezes were committed to keeping them together and providing a stable, loving home. The oldest girl, Valerie – who’s now 7 – and her younger brother, Aiden – now 5 – had already endured four foster placements. The youngest, Allison – who’s now 3 – had been in foster care since she was four-months old. All had been removed as a result of parental substance abuse and domestic violence.

“You can see how happy the kids are because they know they’re not going to be sent to another home,” says Miguel. “They understand that they’ll now be part of our family forever.” Macrina adds, “This is the family we’ve always yearned for. We’re so lucky.”
