The popular Los Angeles Zoo was the site for Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services’ 2017 Celebrating Children 9th Annual Gala on Saturday, Oct. 7. Approximately 400 people attended the sold out event. The fundraiser raised over $475,000 that will help fund the therapeutic and other crucial support services that Hathaway-Sycamores provides each year to thousands of children, teens, young adults, and families facing serious life challenges.

Those on hand had the chance to visit with Billy the Elephant, harpy eagles, otters and other aquatic species as they explored the zoo after hours  before enjoying a delicious sit-down dinner catered by Taste of the Wild.

The heart of the Celebrating Children event was the presentation of the Hathaway-Sycamores’ Celebrating Children Award, which honors an individual or family that exemplifies the values of integrity, leadership and commitment to the well-being of children, adults, families, and communities. This year’s award recipients were philanthropists and La Cañada residents, Gayle and Michael Galper.

Commenting on the Celebrating Children Award recipients, Hathaway-Sycamores’ President and CEO Debra Manners said, “ We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to honor two very special people, Gayle and Mike Galper who, through their many years of involvement in Hathaway-Sycamores, have changed the lives of countless young people whose lives have been impacted by violence and trauma. The evening in their honor allowed Hathaway-Sycamores to raise funds that will bring healing and hope to thousands of other children and families. To them and to those who contributed so generously that evening, we extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude.”

The Galpers have been supporters of Hathaway-Sycamores for over a decade. Michael served as Hathaway-Sycamores Board Chair from 2013 to 2015 and is currently Chair of the Emeritus Board. Gayle has been a member of the Los Altos Auxiliary, Hathaway-Sycamores’ support group, since 2012. Recalling his introduction to the agency Michael said, “I’ll never forget how inspired I was when I toured the El Nido facility, and met several of the key staff and was able to witnessed first-hand the dedication and caring that they provide to the residents and clients they serve, and I knew I wanted to become more involved.” Commenting on their continued support of Hathaway-Sycamores, Michael Galper credited the organization’s commitment to excellence. “It really is a combination of dedication and compassion of the staff, innovation to deliver the latest methods and treatment protocols, a unwavering commitment to inclusivity, making sure that everyone is treated with respect, no matter their race, sexual orientation, ethnicity or social background – a commitment to providing the highest and most appropriate services, even if they are not fully reimbursed.”

Following the presentation of the Celebrating Children Award, the original video Path to Permanency featuring the stories of three young adults whose lives have been changed by the services they have received at Hathaway-Sycamores El Nido residential campus, made its debut. The programs on campus include Foster Care and Adoption Services, Shelter Care and out-of-home care for boys with severe challenges that prevent them from living safely at home.
