Thanksgiving Dinners at Hathaway-Sycamores Foster a Sense of Family for the Young People We Serve

We recognize that the holidays can be a challenging period for the youth and young adults we serve who are currently in or transitioning out of the foster care system. We take exceptional care to ensure that they feel the warmth of family and community during this special time of year. This starts with Thanksgiving.

Our TAY Transitional Housing Program hosted its annual Thanksgiving dinner, now in its 18th year. Young adults supported by the program are treated to a formal dining experience where they celebrate with loved ones, friends and our staff.

This year, the event was held at the luxurious Noor restaurant in Pasadena. Our young guests had the chance to eat a delicious Thanksgiving meal and yummy desserts, and win some fun raffle prizes ranging from gift cards to life-sized teddy bears.

Young adults impacted by our program volunteered to share their reasons for being thankful this year. Here are heartfelt words of gratitude from several young speakers to the staff that support them:

I really love you, because you act like a mom. I’ve seen you’re there for everybody. I’m happy I met you and I’ve never met anybody like that. I really appreciate you. I love you a lot.

Everybody who works here–I appreciate you guys. Your job is not easy and I appreciate you and I’m pretty sure everybody else does, too. You guys are doing really good for the youth.

I’m very new to the program I would say I have only been in my apartment for about a week. I am so grateful for staff, you listened to my situation and did everything you could to get me moved in as fast as possible. And for that, I am so grateful because God only knows where I could be right now. Every day I wake up thankful for another day in a bed, and so I can’t thank you guys enough for moving as fast as you did.

The El Nido campus held a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for its young residents, ages 6 to 18 years, made possible by the generosity of our Los Altos Auxiliary Group and Friends of Foster Children.

Staff members ensure that each boy has special guests joining him at this dinner, by extending an invitation to family members, caregivers, foster parents or other important figures in the youths’ lives. This year, more than 45 family members, mentors, law enforcement and teachers joined the boys for music, food and fun. A full Thanksgiving dinner was prepared by El Nido chef Bruce Baker and his staff, and included turkey, ham and all the trimmings plus many wonderful desserts.

Our caring support group Los Altos Auxiliary and the amazing volunteers of Epicentre Church gave their time to serve dinner and desserts to the guests. During the event, some boys volunteered to share why they were thankful this year. Santa also stopped by to talk to the youth and their families about their Holiday wishes.

We are thankful at Hathaway-Sycamores.

Thank you to the many staff, donors and volunteers for making Thanksgiving a joyful time for the young individuals we serve.
