Iconic local landmarks are interpreted anew through the eyes of aspiring young artists on the colorful, enchanting pages of the 2013 Hathaway-Sycamores Children’s Art Calendar. Created through the “I Love LA” art project by area students who receive academic-enrichment and other support services from the Hathaway-Sycamores Highland Park Family Resource Center, this one-of-a-kind calendar is an ideal holiday gift. Not only is the Hathaway-Sycamores calendar both beautiful and affordable ($10, plus $5 shipping and handling), but proceeds will help fund life-changing services for the thousands of youngsters and families served annually by Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services, including those who utilize the Highland Park Family Resource Center.

This unique calendar came to be as part of an innovative, summer art program offered by the Highland Park Family Resource Center. Through this program, at-risk and underserved youngsters—ranging in age from 6 to 11—spent afternoons at the Family Resource Center receiving art instruction from Master-in-Residence artist Mary Kay Wilson. Well known for her work with watercolors, Wilson’s award-winning paintings have been widely exhibited at both regional and national art exhibits.

At the weekly sessions, students were taught basic concepts of drawing and watercolor painting, as well as the technique of utilizing paper mache to add texture. According to Wilson, who has led these sessions for the past five summers, the program is designed to not only introduce youngsters to a new skill set, but also to introduce them to an empowering avenue of self-expression. “I’m grateful to Hathaway-Sycamores for the opportunity to work with both the talented young artists and the dedicated staff at the Family Resource Center on this project,” said Wilson. “In addition to developing new skills,” she added, “the young artists also gained tools to express themselves in a positive and creative way.”

The calendars are can be preordered for $10.00 plus $5.00 shipping. Order below or contact  Andi Sica by email or phone at (626) 395-7100 ext. 2516.
