Created through the “World Traveler” art project by area students who receive academic-enrichment and other support services from the Hathaway-Sycamores Highland Park Family Resource Center, this one-of-a-kind calendar is an ideal holiday gift. Not only is the Hathaway-Sycamores calendar both beautiful and affordable, but proceeds will help fund crucial services needed by the thousands of youngsters and families served annually by Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services – including those who utilize the Highland Park Family Resource Center.

This unique calendar came to be as part of an innovative spring art program offered by the Highland Park Family Resource Center located at 840 N. Avenue 66. Through this program, at-risk and underserved children – ranging in age from 7 to 12 – spent afternoons at the Family Resource Center receiving art instruction from Master-in-Residence artist Mary Kay Wilson. Well known for her work with watercolors, Wilson’s award-winning paintings have been widely exhibited at both regional and national art shows. Wilson’s interpretation of the Mission San Fernando Rey de España (located in Mission Hills, Calif.) is currently being displayed on Metro buses and rail cars traveling throughout Los Angeles County as part of Metro’s “Through the Eyes of Artists” poster series. (Other Wilson paintings can be viewed at www.marykaywilsonart.com.)

At the weekly sessions, students were taught basic concepts of drawing and watercolor painting, as well as the technique of utilizing paper mâché to add texture. According to Wilson, who has led these sessions for six years, the program is designed to not only introduce youngsters and adolescents to a new skill set, but also to introduce them to an empowering avenue of self-expression. “I am inspired by the art that these kids created, and their vision of the world,” said Wilson. Adding, “It was both challenging and exciting to guide them on their journey.”
