Created through the “Stories Come to Life” art project, the Hathaway-Sycamores calendar is both beautiful and affordable, and proceeds will help fund crucial services needed by the thousands of youngsters and families served annually by Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services.

This unique calendar came to be as part of an innovative spring art program offered by Hathaway-Sycamores’ School-Based Services to students at two Pasadena elementary schools. The children – ranging in age from 5 to 10 – spent afternoons receiving art instruction from Master-in-Residence artist Mary Kay Wilson. Well known for her work with watercolors, Wilson’s award-winning paintings have been widely exhibited at both regional and national art shows. Wilson’s “Rose Parade” painting is currently on display at the Pasadena Museum of History in the Contemporary Masters Artistic Eden IV exhibit through January 11, 2015. (Other Wilson paintings can be viewed at www.marykaywilsonart.com.)

At the weekly sessions, students were taught basic concepts of drawing and watercolor painting. An important character or element of the story was painted on a separate piece of paper, cut out and attached to the painting (like a pop-up book), depicting the idea that when we read stories, they truly do come to life. The program is designed to not only introduce youngsters and adolescents to a new skill set, but also to introduce them to an empowering avenue of self-expression. According to Mary Kay, “It is my privilege to work with these kids, they inspire me as we learn and grow together. It is exciting to see the results of their vision.”
