The Youth Leadership at our Family Resource Center were awarded certificates of recognition for their community involvement by Council Member Jose Huizar and Assembly Member Jimmy Gomez Monday night. Lucy Aparicio from Council Member Huizar’s office was present to hand out the certificates.
The evening celebration was the culmination of the group’s activities for the year. The Youth Leadership Program partners youth with community leaders and promotes community involvement. Some of their activities this year included a visit to a local senior convalescent facility at Christmas, meeting with representatives from various government offices, learning about fundraising and holding their own fundraising event. The goal for the youth is to develop leadership skills, and become decision-making, problem-solving citizens.
Youth participate in leadership development workshops, learning how individuals interact with institutions in their communities to create change. They prepare for civic engagement through project-based service opportunities, allowing them to practice the skills they are learning in a supportive environment. At Monday night’s event the youth spoke about some of their experiences with the group and shared their future goals. We can expect to see great things from this impressive group!
