This year, we have had the privilege of developing a wonderful relationship with the Jimmy Miller Foundation which has supported the social and emotional growth of young consumers from our Highland Park Family Resource Center. The organization and its volunteers bring a unique approach to healing through the activity of surfing.
The foundation’s surf lessons are led by expert volunteers who provide individualized instruction and a group discussion to build self-efficacy and self-confidence in participants.
Thanks to this partnership, members of our Youth Leadership Program and students from the Learning Lab have both had the chance to jump on their first surf boards and ride some waves.
For all of the youth, it was their first time surfing; for some, it was their first time in the ocean. Most were apprehensive at first, but they were in good hands with the Jimmy Miller team and soon felt at ease.
As one youth recounted, “I was intimidated by the ocean but now that I’ve surfed, I’m not scared anymore.”
We are so grateful to the Jimmy Miller Foundation for providing this once in a lifetime experience for our youth.
