Since Hathaway-Sycamores’ Youth Leadership Program started in 2016, our young members have been active participants in Lummis Days, a special community celebration in Northeast Los Angeles in honor of Charles Fletcher Lummis, that highlights local art, culture and history. Project Coordinator for our program, Yvonne Sarceda, has been involved in the festivities in a variety of ways and encourages YLP members to give back by volunteering each year.

It is vital for our youth to know about Lummis Days,” she explains. “It shares the heritage of this community through a variety of activities held at Northeast LA landmarks. The youth experience its diversity and learn about its history firsthand.

Our young members have a chance to have fun and learn at the festival, and as volunteers, they also get to connect to community on a deeper level. Through their involvement, they have opportunities to meet and build relationships with community leaders and become aware of how their community works. In turn, they are viewed as active contributors.

This year, members had the chance to participate in the Lummis Days kick-off event, a world premiere of the film “Con Safos” at Occidental College, where they greeted and provided programs to more than 250 guests. It was a full weekend for them as they helped across the 3-day festival with set up, registration tables for community booths, entertainment on the main stage at Sycamore Grove Park, and water distribution to attendees.

Several YLP members also had a community booth to share about their involvement with the Franklin High School Robo-Nerds, and present a Robotics demonstration. Hathaway-Sycamores staff hosted a neighboring booth reaching out to attendees with information on our mental health services and other supports.

The weekend was a success for the youth who felt a tremendous connection to their community. “Ultimately, I believe it builds a true sense of pride,” Yvonne shares, “when they see how people of like minds, even though different from each other, can celebrate where they live.

As an extra special treat this year, YLP members had the opportunity to meet with Suzanne Lummis several weeks before the festival. Ms. Lummis is an LA-based poet and granddaughter of Charles Fletcher Lummis, first City Editor of The Los Angeles Times, and honoree of the Lummis Day festivities. She shared about her educational background and career path, and performed a reading of several poems she has written. Ms. Lummis encouraged youth to embark on their own creative journey. Thank you for inspiring our young members!
