Hathaway-Sycamores' Mental Health First Aid Training
Hathaway-Sycamores is proud to be an official trainer in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA). The daylong course is free to attendees, and a vital opportunity to increase the pillars of support for young people in our communities.

This spring, we were thrilled to host two highly-attended trainings that have equipped more community members with the skills and understanding to support youth experiencing mental health crises through early intervention.

Course participants learn to identify the potential risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents. They also receive a 5-step action plan to help a young person in crisis connect with appropriate professional help. Discussions during the training consider the prevalence of various mental health disorders in youth across the US, the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities, as well as participants’ own views and feelings about youth mental health problems and disorders.

‘I don’t know what to do’ is often the barrier people express when faced with the situation of interacting with someone with mental health challenges or distress,” explains Kameelah Wilkerson, Hathaway-Sycamores’ Director of Clinical Compliance and a certified MHFA instructor. “Mental Health First Aid is an ideal mental health awareness and engagement vehicle for all members of our community, from parents, to clergy, to professionals. The 5-step action plan provides participants with concrete steps to take when encountering a fellow community member in distress.

We asked recent attendees about their experience in the YMHFA trainings. All of those who have attended this year viewed it as something they would recommend to others, and that the hands-on practice and action model was beneficial. Several shared about their experience, one noting that it was, “Very engaging and to the point,” while another shared that the workshop was led by, “Excellent instructors! I will apply all the tools given at my job and personal life.

You can become an ally to youth in your community by taking our training. We’re offering another opportunity to gain these skills at the end of June! See details below and register here for this free course.
