Thank you to everyone who participated in Hathaway-Sycamores’ 2014 Celebrating Children Awards Reception held at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, Sept.16th. Some 400 people attended the annual event, which raised nearly $155,000 to help fund therapeutic and other crucial support services for the children and families served by Hathaway-Sycamores.

Those on hand for this major-league special event not only had the entire stadium to themselves – as the Boys in Blue were battling the Rockies in Colorado – but they also were treated to a meet-and-greet photo/autograph session with Dodger great and six-time National League All-Star Ron Cey. Roger Owens “The Peanut Man” was also in attendance mingling with guests.

Guests enjoyed a behind-the-scenes stadium tour including a trip down to the field, a visit to the Dodger dugout, an exclusive look at the Dugout Club that houses the Dodgers’ six World Series trophies, and a walk through Vin Scully’s broadcast booth. Following a Stadium Club cocktail reception, guests then enjoyed a suite-quality dinner buffet. The centerpiece of the Celebrating Children event, however, was the presentation of the Hathaway-Sycamores’ Celebrating Children Award, which honors an individual or family that exemplifies the values of integrity, leadership and commitment to the well-being of children, adults, families, and communities. This year’s award recipients were philanthropists and longtime La Cañada residents Annsley and George Strong whose roots with the agency run particularly deep. Specifically, Annsley was first introduced to the organization when she was a member of the Los Altos Auxiliary, which raises funds for the children and teens who are in residential treatment at Hathaway-Sycamores’ El Nido campus in Altadena.

The Los Altos Auxiliary thus served as a bridge to Hathaway-Sycamores, and Annsley Strong – along with her husband George Strong, Jr. – has been actively involved ever since. She served on the agency’s Board of Directors for 13 years and held the position of Board Chair from 2006 to 2008. Annsley Strong currently serves on Hathaway-Sycamores’ Advisory Board, and is a member of the agency’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Commenting on the Celebrating Children Award recipients, Hathaway-Sycamores’ President and CEO William Martone said, “Annsley and George Strong are clearly committed to helping others, and Hathaway-Sycamores is unquestionably fortunate that they’ve devoted so much of their time, talents, and generosity to benefit the children and families we serve.” Adding, “They truly are an inspirational couple.”

Guests at the event also saw the premiere of the video “How to Make a Family Happen,” the inspiring and touching stories of how four foster children found their forever families. Shoshana Puccia, a successful single career woman and Miguel and Macrina Gutierrez, a married couple who shared their experiences with adopting through foster care in the video were in attendance with their kids.
