Recording Artist and Broadway Performer Brightens

the Day of those Who Call Hathaway-Sycamores Home

A visit by recording artist and Broadway performer Crystal Starr recently brightened the day for some two dozen boys in residential care at our El Nido campus in Altadena.

Starr will again be seeing these boys on Dec. 9, but at that time she’ll be greeting them from the stage of Los Angeles’ Arc Theater. That’s because Starr—who has performed with a host of chart-topping artists including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Kanye West, Neyo, John Legend, Babyface and also appeared on “American Idol”—has organized a holiday concert that is free for the foster kids and foster families served by Hathaway-Sycamores and other agencies. Admission for all others is $20, or $15 with a gift donation toward the gift drive.

Aptly named “A Crystal Starr Christmas,” the event—which will be headlined by Starr, who was featured in the hit Broadway musical “Baby It’s You!”—also will include performances by: actor/singer Wayne Brady, Leon Thomas III from The Nickelodeon show “Victorious” and also Roshon Fegan from Disney’s “Camp Rock” and “Shake It Up”; Ryan Cross’ Elevation Orchestra; Compton High School Drum Line, musical artist Judith Hill; Oaks Middle School Choir.

Not only is the talent-rich event free, but every youngster in attendance will receive a holiday gift.

Having grown up with neighborhood foster children, Starr says she feels compelled to help these youngsters, many of whom have endured unimaginable trauma. As she puts it, “Working with these kids makes me realize the reason I was given the gift of music; it’s so that I can give back and try to empower these kids to believe in themselves.”
