Hathaway-Sycamores New School Program

The Glendale High School South Campus is a new partnership we are undertaking with the Foothill Special Education Local Planning Area on the campus of a local high school. Following the success of Hathaway-Sycamores Yellen Learning Center, this program will establish a classroom on the campus of Glendale High School for students who are seriously emotionally disturbed or have other severe mental health problems. Currently these types of students are sent to an alternative school, residential treatment or even hospitalized. These students are at high risk for dropping out or expulsion due to their severe behaviors. We believe that the children and their families can be better served in their home communities. Remaining in their home school will also help to keep them integrated with their peers and afford them opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities. In addition to the classroom teacher, there will be an education assistant, a behavior specialist and a clinician on site to provide support for the students. The program should be more cost effective than an alternative school or out of home care. If the program proves to be successful, we hope to replicate it at other schools. Although a majority of the costs for the program will be funded by the school district, Hathaway-Sycamores will incur start up costs in establishing the Glendale High School South Campus such as furniture, school supplies, computers and staff training.
