Hathaway-Sycamores 2017 Celebrating Children honorees Gayle and Michael Galper

2017 Celebrating Children honorees Gayle and Michael Galper

A decade ago Michael Galper, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, was spending much of his free time coaching his daughter’s La Cañada softball team. His desire and ability to easily connect with the kids was recognized by a Hathaway-Sycamores Board Member whose daughter was also on the team. Michael’s caring and deep commitment to the welfare of children together with his financial services background made him an ideal candidate for the Hathaway-Sycamores Board. He has served on the board of directors for the last decade and held a number of positions, including chair of the board from 2013 to 2015.

Michael is impressed by the variety of ways that Hathaway-Sycamores touches the community through a vast array of programs. As a board member, he was stirred by  many moving stories; from children living in unspeakable conditions before arriving at El Nido, to children that have gotten college scholarships with the assistance of the Learning Lab, to the young adults learning life skills under the guidance and safety net of the Transitional Independent Living Program. Michael also shared that getting to know and see the dedication of the staff has been one of the most rewarding aspects of serving on the board.

Professionally, Michael recently retired from PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, where he was a partner in the Los Angeles office leading the West Coast Health Services Practice. He held a variety of leadership positions over the years with the firm, including leading the National Health Insurance Practice. He is currently a professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health where he received both the Ira Alpert Service Award and the Celebrate Exceptional Teaching award.

Gayle Galper is equally committed to giving back and was involved with the PTA and the Girl Scouts when their daughter Jenna was young. In 2012 Gayle joined the Los Altos Auxiliary, the group dedicated to improving the lives of the boys at Hathaway-Sycamores’ residential campus. Los Altos provides a human connection and a touch of home to the boys at El Nido. At holiday parties, birthday celebrations and other special occasions she has baked goodies, brought gifts and simply talked and listened to the boys.  Los Altos also raises funds to provide needed improvements to the El Nido campus as well as funding fun summer events and activities for the boys and their families.

Gayle values the friendship and comarderie of the Los Altos members.  Gayle also volunteers at the Community Center of La Canada Flintridge, and as a counselor and instructor for the IRS VITA Tax-Aide program.

Michael and Gayle met on the job at Coopers & Lybrand in 1986 and this year the couple celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. They have one daughter, Jenna who recently graduated from college. In their leisure time the Galpers enjoy traveling, hiking, playing golf and rehabing houses.

With their values of integrity, leadership and commitment to improving the lives of children, young adults and families, Gayle and Michael Galper are exemplary honorees of the Celebrating Children Award. Hathaway-Sycamores is grateful to the Galpers for their commitment to creating positive change in the world.

We hope you are making your plans to join us for the event on Saturday October 7, 2017 at the Los Angeles Zoo. In addition to being a fun evening for the whole family, funds raised from the event will support programs at our El Nido campus. Click here to learn more about Celebrating Children.
