Hathaway-Sycamores’ Residents Attend GRAMMY Museum Luncheon with Keynote Speaker First Lady Michelle Obama

A group of boys and teens who are receiving residential therapeutic treatment at Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services’ El Nido campus in Altadena had the rare opportunity to attend a special event featuring First Lady Michelle Obama.

The July 16 event was the GRAMMY Museum’s Jane Ortner Education Award Luncheon, which was held at L.A. Live’s Club Nokia. The Hathaway-Sycamores’ youngsters were treated to lunch followed by inspirational remarks made by Michelle Obama, who was being honored for her commitment to arts and education. The event also honored local educator Sunshine Cavalluzi for integrating music into her curricula and six-time GRAMMY nominee Janelle Monáe for her dedication to education through the arts. Monáe also performed at the event.

Commenting on the luncheon, Hathaway-Sycamores’ President and CEO William Martone said, “The children and teens in our residential-treatment program have faced tremendous challenges in their young lives, and as we help them to rebuild their lives, it’s wonderful that we can brighten their day by bringing them to such a memorable event.”
