The renovation of Rowland Cottage at our El Nido Residential campus is now complete and, thanks to our generous philanthropic partners, the modern space is both homelike and functional for the boys that live there.

Hathaway-Sycamores Rowland Cottage

Built in the 1950s, Rowland Cottage traditionally housed 35 boys who are in foster care and need a safe haven as they receive 24/7 care in a positive and nurturing environment and prepare for their next placement or reunification with a family member.

Our project included:

  • Complete renovations of the bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces
  • Increased capacity with the construction of three new bedrooms
  • Creation of a patio with a pergola, outdoor kitchen and furniture for the entire campus to enjoy

These beautiful upgrades were made possible by the generosity of the Freer Family, the Crawford Family, The Rose Hills Foundation, The Ahmanson Foundation and Los Altos Auxiliary.

Lisa and Brad Freer’s generous support of this project was motivated by their understanding of the often tragic consequences for individuals and families facing mental health challenges. After struggling for years – Brad’s brother, Todd – took his own life. Brad and Lisa, along with Todd’s lifelong friends, the Crawford Family, felt compelled to make a positive difference in the lives of other individuals and families facing similar circumstances.

“Lisa and I believe deeply in the life changing work that is being done at Hathaway-Sycamores, and we were proud to support the Rowland Cottage renovation in honor of my brother Todd. It is our greatest desire that the cottage is a place of hope and healing for all the boys who live there.” – Brad Freer

The boys have expressed much appreciation and excitement upon moving in:

“This is the best space I have ever lived in. We have so much room to spread out!”’

“I have already decorated my chalkboard wall 5 times!”

“We have so much room. This space is so nice!”

This renovation could not have come at a better time for the boys at El Nido who have been observing safer at home policies on campus during the COVID-19 outbreak. Their new home is modern, comfortable and offers great spaces for distance learning and recreation.

Please consider making a donation to Hathaway-Sycamores to support our families and the foster boys that reside at our residential campus. Funds raised provide mental health support and overall guidance to the many children and families who are deeply struggling during the continuing pandemic.

Our communities are counting on us, so thank you for joining with us to make a difference.
