Our School-Based Services Stay in Session through the Summer

School may be out for summer, but that doesn’t slow down our school-based services (SBS) team. In fact, summer becomes a critical time to support the students we serve during the school year. The break can be challenging for kids and their families as schedules change and days become more unpredictable.

We work with our school-based families to ensure that they feel supported during this transitional time. We encourage them to reinforce the progress their child made throughout the school year by continuing summer visits with our clinical team and through daily practice of social skills.

Our SBS team also offers summer events and activities for students throughout the regions we serve. To start the summer off right, they host an annual “Kick Off to Summer” BBQ, filled with engaging, skill building activities. This year’s festivities brought together more than 40 students in grades K-12 and their families.

The team also offers a three-week summer camp in July at a partnering elementary school in Pasadena. It provides youth, ages 4-17 years, with an opportunity to build social skills during the summer break in a fun, safe environment.

Their Fresh Start program in late July helps students making the transition to high school by preparing them to have a successful freshman year. Incoming 9th graders learn to make the best of their time in school through lessons on organization; resolving conflict and developing positive peer relationships; following through with responsibilities; managing stress and other strong emotions; and developing resilience and coping skills. In addition, students have the opportunity to meet with an administrator and go on a campus tour, easing them into this new experience.

For our team, the summer months are an extension of the school year, continuing the important clinical work with students we serve, so they can head into the new school year feeling supported in their mental health while reaching for their goals in the classroom.
