Learning Lab Keeps Students on Track for a New School Year

For the Learning Lab at our Highland Park Family Resource Center, school may be out for summer, but there’s no break from learning! Since early June, the lab’s been offering its Summer Learning Program – two 4-week sessions of daylong educational activities for elementary and middle school students. The program provides youth with a critical opportunity to bridge their academic skills from one school year to the next and avoid the detriments of summer slide.

In the spirit of summer camp, the atmosphere is a combination of learning and fun. Morning lessons sharpen students’ academic skills. A healthy lunch is often created after a lesson on life science in our community garden, where students harvest and cook together. Then the curriculum switches gears to enrichment activities in the afternoon – theater for the younger students and visual arts for middle schoolers. With daily STEAM programming, students have conducted many fun science experiments on heat transfer, magnetism, and concepts of engineering which included a rocket launch! The afternoon arts-based program led by P.S. Arts works toward a final project. For the younger students, this entails the development and presentation of a unique performance for their families, while older students create artwork to display at the program’s culmination.

Learning Lab is all about hard work, but also celebrating achievement as it happens. The program paused for a special end of school year party in June, where students presented their final grades to friends and family, and celebrated with pizza, prizes and certificates of recognition. There’s much to celebrate in the Summer Learning Program, too, where academic achievements happen daily. At the end of each session, families come together for a culmination where they learn about the exciting educational activities their children have engaged in all summer.
