With summer well under way, as a family, it’s easy to get caught up in festive gatherings, vacations, and relaxation, with school fading to a distant memory. This is where summer slide can set in; also known as summer learning loss, the slide is the loss of academic skills and knowledge during summer break. So, keeping your kids motivated and their minds stimulated is critical to building on what they learned in the classroom, and preparing for another school year.

The impact of summer slide on academics is significant. According to the National Summer Learning Association, summer slide can be more prevalent for financially disadvantaged children; they often fall behind, while higher-income children continue to build their skills in the summer months. While most students lose two months of math skills each summer, disadvantaged children on average lose two to three months in reading. Summer learning loss at the elementary school level can have long term effects, causing a wider achievement gap in reading between peers from different socioeconomic backgrounds by the time students reach ninth grade. Families’ access to affordable summer programming can impact the severity of summer slide. Those who can afford it pay an average of $288 per child per week, but for low-income families, summer camp is often cost-prohibitive. Being out of school also impacts health for millions of students who do not have access to structured physical activity and regular school-issued meals they receive during the school year.

However, numerous, low-cost ways to mitigate the academic, physical and mental health impacts of summer slide are in reach for all families. Set a routine to beat summer slide! Register your children for a free summer reading program at your local library – or, start your own family reading challenge where all members participate. If your child already has summer assignments, create a weekly routine to get that summer homework done. Incorporate physical activity over the summer to keep your kids mentally stimulated and healthy. Balance screen time with physical play. Encourage outdoor play such as catch and jumping rope, or sign your kids up for a neighborhood sports team, plan a nature or educational walk through your community, check for community activities on neighborhood sites like Nextdoor, take a bike ride or swim at your local recreational center.
