Virtual “Dinners from the Heart” Event Raises Funds for Children and Families Impacted by COVID-19

Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services’ “Dinners from the Heart” tradition was reimagined for the digital age of social distancing with a Virtual Dinner Party and Cooking Class on Saturday, June 27. The agency partnered with famed Pasadena chef and longtime supporter of Hathaway-Sycamores, Claud Beltran of Bacchus Kitchen and Claud & Co Catering, and Ascension Cellars, a boutique Paso Robles Winery, for this event.

Practicing being safer at home or in small groups with friends, guests enjoyed a curated “Summer Steak Night” 3-course meal that included a watermelon poke salad, grilled prime flat iron steak, sautéed summer squash, chilaquiles verdes, yellow and white nectarine crisp with lavender whip cream for dessert, a signature cocktail, as well as a bottle of Ascension Cellars 2015 Mayhem Syrah.

Besides savoring the delicious flavors of the meal, guests were entertained and learned some pro tips as they virtually cooked alongside Chef Claud.

In addition to the good company, food, and drink the assembled group was making a positive difference in our community as all proceeds from the evening will go directly to help children, young adults, and families impacted by COVID-19, including providing critical mental health services.

Hathaway-Sycamores President and CEO Debra Manners shared with guests, “All of our children, young adults and families we serve are experiencing very dramatic stories and changes to their lives, which means that they need our care now more than ever. That is our purpose for tonight and we could not do this without your support.” Guests also had the opportunity to learn a little more about Hathaway-Sycamores from special guest Jerry Salazar, a former foster youth and current Hathaway-Sycamores Youth Advocate. Jerry spoke about his work with the boys at the agency’s residential campus and his dedication to helping youth who are currently confronting similar challenges to those he once faced.

Hathaway-Sycamores Board Chair Michael Galper summed up the feeling of many guests, “This was a fun and meaningful way to spend our Saturday evening. The food was great, as were the cocktails, wine, and the company. My wife Gayle and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire program and look forward to doing it again.” The agency plans to host a series of Virtual Dinners from the Heart events and the next one is slated to take place on Thursday, August 20th and will be a collaboration with The Raymond Restaurant and their acclaimed bar 1886.
