April is National Volunteer Month, the perfect time to recognize the many individuals and organizations who volunteer their time and talents to help make the world a better place. At Hathaway-Sycamores we are so grateful for each and every one of you!

Like so many other things, volunteering at Hathaway-Sycamores has changed since the pandemic began, but we are happy to share that the dedication and commitment of our generous volunteers has remained consistent. Groups and individuals who pre-COVID came to our El Nido residential campus or other sites to do done-in-a-day projects or work directly with our youth are currently not able to visit in person. The creative ways volunteers have continued to support the children and families we serve is inspiring.

We are happy to share just a few highlights of how our volunteers have supported Hathaway-Sycamores’ mission over the last year:

Hathaway-Sycamores Silver Birches Volunteers

At the beginning of the pandemic, Silver Birches sewed and donated hundreds of handmade masks to help keep our staff and the children, families and young adults we serve safe.

Hathaway-Sycamores National Charity League Volunteers

The National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter collected wish list items including board games, arts and crafts, school supplies, and household items for our children and families.

Hathaway-Sycamores Volunteers from Junior League of Los Angeles

Over the holidays, volunteers from the Junior League of Los Angeles were not able to visit in person, so instead they created a festive virtual holiday craft project for the children and families we serve. The group provided an interactive video with directions and all the craft supplies.

Hathaway-Sycamores Board Member Jan Emamian

Hathaway-Sycamores Board Member Jan Emamian and The Emamian Team at Compass provided materials for our staff and foster youth to make beautiful handmade ornaments, have a tree trimming party (including trees and ornaments) and decorate holiday cookies. To top it off they delivered presents for all of the boys at our residential campus!

Hathaway-Sycamores Food Bank

At our Highland Park Family Resource Center, while the rest of the campus was closed for regular activities, operating our Food Bank was essential work that continued with the help of volunteers.

Los Altos Auxiliary of Hathaway-Sycamores

Our dedicated support group, the Los Altos Auxiliary of Hathaway-Sycamores, brightened life for youth at our residential campus on holidays and throughout the year with special treats, gifts and activities including back to school and Halloween parties, and an on-campus Snow Day – just to name a few.

The boys at our residential campus are grateful for the academic help they have received from volunteers from School on Wheels and the iFoster program who provided virtually tutoring.

Our volunteer Gala Committee, Co-Chaired by Rita Henderson and Karen Palmersheim, did an amazing job of helping us turn our Celebrating Children Spring Gala into an uplifting and successful virtual event.

Thank you also to Friends of Foster Children San Gabriel Valley, Las Candelas, Little Voices – you all made life on at our residential campus better during this trying year.

Hathaway-Sycamores Board Members

Last – but certainly not least – we so appreciate our volunteer Board Members (some of our best cheerleaders in the community) who offer their expertise and experience, donate time and money, and help raise awareness about the important work we do at Hathaway-Sycamores.

Thank you to all our volunteers, you do make a difference and we hope to see you in person again soon!
